At The Art Pavilion, Mile End, London for ECOFeminism Festival.
This was the debut performance of a first draft of my new work. It was presented at the ECOFeminism Festival organised by Art From Heart, at The Art Pavilion in Tower Hamlets, London. I was performing in front of Margaret Jennings’ ‘Y’ artwork and my co-performer was Cy Wol.
It was a challenging piece, being partly based on the true story of my ancestors, and partly a fictional re-imagining. I had been asked to create a life drawing performance, so there’s quite a lot of stillness. Some of the dialogue has been pre-recorded.
This first outing of the work allowed me to realise what works best, and what I would like to develop further. I enjoyed the process of researching, writing, creating and preparing, but was not entirely satisfied with the performance.
It was the most complex piece I had ever attempted and I would like to nail it in future. Asking friends for advice had been tricky as it concerns historical times and places that few were familiar with. Thinking about how to address the issues of British colonialism and class consciousness in the Victorian era remains important.
Recording of the live performance (1 hour 40 minutes).
This video is free to access but if you would like to make a donation towards my work as an artist, it would be highly appreciated as the performance was entirely self-funded – paypal.me/EstherBunting
