Performance #18

Roots

3 April 2019

At The Telegraph at the Earl of Derby, London for Telegraph Hill Festival 2019.

For this show I returned to the Telegraph Hill Festival as part of their 25th anniversary line-up.

‘Roots’ transported me to the early 20th century, to distant parts of the globe from where my ancestors hailed. I gave new voices to the original writings left behind by each protagonist, sharing their secrets of old.

I feel very lucky to have their words because they speak to me strongly, and shed light on forgotten times that may be encoded in my genes. They teach me about history from their views, and I learn more about why I am the way I am.

My blog post ‘Making Roots‘ gives a detailed background to the making of the show, the historical figures, and my research trip to Molėtai, at the heart of Lithuania.
