Stories of Women: Roots
22 March 2019
At The Art Pavilion, Mile End, London for We Grow into the Forest.
‘We Grow into the Forest‘ was an interdisciplinary group art exhibition inspired by our relationship with nature. It took place from 14 March to 24 March 2019 at The Art Pavilion in Tower Hamlets, London.
I’d been running ‘Stories of Women’ model-centred life drawing workshops for women at The Feminist Library in London as part of my Spirited Bodies project, and I was invited to bring a performance version of the workshop to this exhibition.
I invited the audience into branches of my life, untangling my threads and getting to know my knots as I explored my roots. The life drawing performance play took us from the USA to Lithuania to South Africa, with a few cultural stop-overs in between. We have many ancestors and we awake them when we are truly alive.
You can read more about the research, creation and performance of this play in my 2019 blog, ‘Making Roots‘.
